Embedding research into a recovery organisation
-
Location
North West Northern Ireland
ARC Fitness are an addiction recovery organisation, rooted in lived and learned experience of addiction. They use an approach combining both physical activity and involvement in a supportive recovery community. They offer practical help, support and motivation for people struggling with substance misuse and promote healthy and sustainable recovery through exercise and positive lifestyle choices
Together, we can break the chains of isolation and replace them with unbreakable bonds of connection and hope – Iron Sharpens Iron Campaign 2025
Through their Evidence Building Grant they are piloting a ‘Researcher in Residence’ model of partnership, which is unusual in such a small organisation as theirs, embedding research expertise and creating a lasting legacy in their internal data, evaluation and research structures. They are also developing ways to understand the impact of their work, and shape practice within the wider substance misuse/alcohol sector.

We feel that allowing recovery communities to actively shape research that addresses their needs, moving beyond being passive subjects is a vital process.
